Mary - Family Support Worker
Hello, my name is Mary, and I'm a Family Support Worker. My role is to support families in being able to navigate complex challenges & circumstances, often acting as a bridge between families and other essential services to prevent crises from escalating.
The main areas of my work come under the following categories:
Parenting & Behaviour
Assisting families with behaviour management, daily routines, household management, and child development.
Education and Learning
Supporting children's engagement with school in maintaining good attendance levels.
Crisis and Safeguarding
Intervening when families face domestic violence, mental health issues, substance abuse, financial hardship/homelessness. as well as monitoring a child's welfare.
Practical Support
Helping parents to manage money & budgeting, attending medical appointments, connecting with food banks, advocating for the family.
Emotional Support
Working directly with the families & children to develop their emotional literacy and coping tools, supporting parents with the demands of raising a family in adverse circumstances.
Many of the families that I work with & support are low income families/households experiencing economic hardship, who are quite often either underserved, or under resourced themselves, sometimes experiencing both of these factors.
I have been able to make several successful applications to the Derek Russell Foundation which enabled families & their children to access expanded opportunities that has brought about a positive and tangible improvement in the families outcome. This has gone on to build key skills such as their self esteem & belief, confidence, communication & social skills, positive changes in behaviour & independence , improved academic growth.
The vital support from the Derek Russell Foundation created broadened horizons underpinning long term economical & societal impact.
I would like to express my appreciation to The Derek Russell Foundation for their committed support in terms of making a difference to the trajectory of the families and children's lives.
Mary
